Things to Consider While Choosing Floor Tiles

Report Problem

The increasing demand for tiles is catching everyone’s attention. All things considered (the broad range of choice, easy maintenance, variety of designs), it’s only logical to get tiles for your floor. But, deciding to buy tiles for your home is only the first step that will be followed by many other decisions and steps that choosing the right tiles for you requires.

There are countless magazines, articles, write-ups on different types of tiles. They mostly tend to ignore the fact that no one type of tiles will best suit every customer. A big perk, and of the utmost importance to me, is the fact that you can choose to customize your tiles according to your own preferences.

That’s why I have come up with the most essential factors that you must consider to choose the right tiles for you.

Style of Choice

First of all, you need to have a vision, because without it, when you are done, you will end up with something that you probably won’t like. Just like you are reading this article to plan how to buy tiles, you have to plan how you want your house to look.

If you are not looking to invest too much time thinking, you can directly choose from the popular styles. Honeycomb marble tile is such a great option.

Color Palette

To get this right, you have to think about how you would like your room or home to feel like. Color expresses vibrant emotion, without us consciously noticing it. It can have an impact on our mood, feelings, and much more.

Color can help you compliment other furniture and the paint of your room. So, you must consider the color palette you will be going for according to the environment you are trying to set and the furniture in the room.

Grout Color

People tend to ignore the importance of the color of grout. Usually, people try to hide the grout by complementing it with the color of the tiles. But, you can choose to not hide it and totally free it by choosing a contrasting grout color.

For example, you could use a grout color for your bathroom that would blend well with the tiles, and for the kitchen, you could choose a more contrasting color. Textured tiles are usually hard to clean, but with wider grout, the maintenance can be made easier.

Tile Material

Tiles can come in various materials: ceramic, glass, stones, etc. All of these materials have different maintenance needs and characteristics. It’s essential to choose the content which you can maintain and goes with your choice of style.

Durability of Tile

The durability of a tile depends on its material, brand, and of course, your budget. While you must cram everything within your budget, it’s also important to forecast for how long you would like your tiles to keep up.

Water Resistance

The kitchen, bathroom, and hallways require some level of water resistance. For example, textured tiles can resist water more than other tiles.

Chemical Resistance

Since we are talking about floor tiles, it’s important to note that accidents will be more likely than you would like to admit. You might spill something in the kitchen or even in your bedroom. The probability is more when you have children in your house. So, it’s essential to check what kinds of chemicals your tiles will be able to resist or not.

Size of the Room

A lot of things can depend on the size of your room, because if you have, say, a smaller room, then you can easily choose tiles that can make your room look more spacious.

Sunlight in the Room

Some tiles can reflect the sunlight, and it can affect the overall look of your room or other spaces in the house. So, you need to check how much natural light gets into the room. If there will be a lot of sunlight for a large part of the day, you should consider getting tiles that won’t reflect the sunlight.

Fire Resistance

It’s always better to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. If you are that kind of person, you should definitely check if the tiles have fire resistance or not.

Slip Resistance

“Will the tile be slippery when it is wet?” is a common question when choosing tiles. You will not want your tiles to be slippery in wet conditions, for particular rooms.

It’s one of the most important factors to consider when buying or choosing tiles. How much time you need to spend on maintenance will highly depend on the choice of material, style, and grout.

For example, it’s hard to maintain textured tiles as dirt and dust can quickly get stuck. So, cleaning them requires special maintenance,

It’s easy to talk about style, color palette, durability, etc. But, it’s hard to choose the right balance of everything within a particular budget. So, when you are planning on buying those gorgeous tiles, remember to keep your budget in mind.

I have dark gray tiles with a mixed stone patterned in my house. They are great for not looking super soiled in an area like a kitchen. A housemate in the duplex really liked the pattern.
