6 Ways to Save on a Wedding Cake

When planning a wedding, brides want a beautiful cake for their special day! At my own wedding, there were countless photographs of the cake. Having a stunning cake does not have to be a budget buster. My husband and I strive to live frugally and our wedding was no different.  However, living economically will not sacrifice flavor or appearance of your dream cake. Below are just a few tips to help you save, but enjoy your tasty cake:

  1. Supermarket Wedding Cakes

Did you know that local supermarkets offer wedding cakes? These locations offer cakes for as low as $0.64 per serving! The Wedding Channel states that the average wedding cake can cost up to $6.00 a serving.

  1. Celebration Cakes

When going to your local bakery, ask them about their celebration cake pricing. Many times, you can purchase a 3-tier celebration cake for cheaper than a wedding cake. These cakes look just as decorative. Have doubts? Ask to view a photo-book of their past creations.

  1. Plain Cakes

A great way to save on wedding cakes is to purchase one with minimal décor. Piping flowers, faux-pearls, and design-work can double the price of your cake. Instead, add real flowers! Most likely, mishaps will occur with your flower arrangements; use those beauties on your cake!

  1. Skip the Fondant

Fondant provides wedding cakes a beautiful and smooth look, however, the price reflects this vision. Opting for cream cheese or buttercream frosting will tremendously help a tight budget. Fondant can also crack or sweat due to heat, so Missouri summers can be worrisome.

  1. Culinary Schools

Keep money in your pocket by asking a culinary school to craft your wedding cake. Students need practice and their instructors will often oversee the project. Some schools will offer a higher-payment and allow their advanced students to work on the cake.

  1. Small Tiered & Large Sheet Cake

Weddings can be pricey, especially when numerous guests are attending. Save by having a small, yet beautiful, tiered cake for the bride and groom. Have a large sheet cake for the guests and save big! This is also a great option if un-expected guests appear at your reception.

Do not let the expense of your cake ruin your budget. Use that extra money and help save on a down-payment on your first home or a romantic honeymoon. The above mentioned tips are just a few ways to save on your special day. Let us know your tips and congrats on your engagement!
